Week #2: June 7th, 2009

Sounds like things went fairly well in week #1.  Well done everybody.  There are, however, a few problems.

1.  Please, please drink your libations from aluminum cans.  We will then be able to recycle those cans toward a good cause. The more glass and plastic our league uses, the more of a hassle it will be to recycle.  No one, I mean NO ONE, wants to linger around and sort recycling.  It's exceptionally messy and time consuming.  Recycling the cans is easy, the CFC bins will be at Hobbs every week we have games there.  We'll even collect the weeks we don't use Hobbs.  Don't be afraid to crush them for space efficiency.  The glass and plastic will remain problematic until we get a handle on that mess (if ever we do).  Also, please keep all plastic and glass off the field of play.  If you have to bring glass and/or plastic, please plan on taking it with you when you leave the field.  That simplifies everything.  Moral of this story, use cans.  It significantly aides the league in our attempt to be self-sustaining while creating less refuse.

2.  We are quickly wearing out our welcome with regards to smoking on the fields.  So as of now (we really should have done this earlier), NO SMOKING ON ANY FIELD OF PLAY.  If you have to smoke, do it from the sidelines AND clean up after yourself.  Especially at the city park grassies and school yards we use.  I'm sorry I have not done a better job of communicating a position on this matter.  I believe two things here, this is not a majority of the league and that this is something we have to do.  If you're producing trash at the parks, please pack it out.  It costs you virtually nothing.

Here's part of an email from the city that set this in motion (Bob Stanclift, Adult Sports Program Supervisor, is one of the gentleman that assigns us fields):

"Apparently they allow their participants to smoke on the field of play and the maintenance workers are faced with the added problem of dealing with all of the butts on the field and getting mixed into our infield material which is kind of an ugly mess for all of our participants that are not allowed to do so. In addition, they have filled up our plastic ball holders that are in the dugouts with ag-lime and are using them as ashtrays. I would hope that we could request that they do not allow this on the field of play and restrict smoking to an area behind the fences.  As badly as they need our fields, I would think they would do what ever is possible to get this corrected.  Thanks."

By the way, there are a bunch of great kickball games this weekend.  Be safe, have fun, stay hydrated, use cans.  Have a great weekend everybody!

Any questions, comments or concerns?  Please contact me or any on the Board at your leisure.  This week I will be available at equipment hand out and pick up if you would like to speak in person.  I look forward to seeing you.
