Brendan Costello AKA Styles has agreed to be the KVKL Documentary Czar and has set a meeting in hopes of getting all interested parties together in one room to develop plans. Â Please see his note below......
It's time for another amazing season of Kaw Valley Kickball and I hope everyone is as excited as I am about it. There's no shortage of fascinating stories, heated debates, and tremendous athleticism in this league, which is why we should, nay, must document this season for future generations to watch and so that when your children's children are playing kickball in the school yard you can share with them a little piece of history and say,"I played that game as an adult."
Kickball in Lawrence holds a special place in everyone's hearts and minds. Whether you're playing, coaching, drinking, cheering, heckling, drinking, calling the cops on players for public urination, or drinking, the game offers a little bit of escapism from the harsh realities of life in Lawrence, KS. Like all great sports documentaries, the real story revolves around people, not the game. Which is why this documentary will be about you and filmed by you. I'll need your help in the coming months to film every facet of the league, from the games and practices to the league meetings and after parties. With your help, we can compile a breadth of footage and interviews to make this documentary something special, not just for our little college town, but for all college towns around America (the exceptions being Manhattan, Colombia, and Lexington). With any luck, this will be the Hoop Dreams of kickball. For your reference, here are some awards Hoop Dreams has won:
ï§ Sundance Film Festival: Audience Award for Best Documentary
ï§ Los Angeles Film Critics Association: Best Documentary
ï§ Chicago Film Critics Award: Best Picture
ï§ Producers Guild of America: Special Merit
ï§ Academy Award Nomination: Best Editing
ï§ George Foster Peabody Award
ï§ Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award
ï§ National Society of Film Critics: Best Documentary
ï§ New York Film Critics Circle: Best Documentary
If you have a camera and would like to be a part of this prestigious endeavor, please attend our upcoming production meeting on Thursday, May 3 at 5pm in the Big 6 Room at The Eldridge. We will need information about what team you play for and what games you will be able to attend in addition to technical specifics for your camera and what format it shoots in.
I'd love for you to be involved and hope you can make the meeting. If you are unable to attend and would still like to help film this season, please don't hesitate to call or email me to discuss your involvement. With your help we can make this documentary amazing. Let's take this bitch off the chain.
